† How were you introduced to the art of “cute cooking”?
I bought a Darth Vader cake pan off of ebay (just look for “Wilton cake pan” or “Wilton character pans”, there are tons!).  I kept making that cake and decorating it, getting better at it, and it all just went from there!
† What inspired your cute creation?
It was inspired by a very cute kids show called Yo Gabba Gabba, if you google it you can see all sorts of adorable clips.  This cake was inspired in particular by a really funny song from the show called “Party in My Tummy”!
† How did you make it?
All decorations are made with fondant.  The sides are iced with chocolate frosting, which I then painted with gel food dye.  Gel food dye is more concentrated so you don’t have to use nearly as much as the kind you would buy in the super market.  That is also the type of dye I use to color the fondant.  I then just molded the little characters and painted on their faces!  The top of the cake is also fondant, you put some corn starch down so it doesnt stick to the surface, and with a smooth rolling pin roll it out just as you would dough.
† Any other comments or tips?
Fondant is fun to work with and easy, but there are a few things that will make it easier.  I’ve seen some sites say to use powdered sugar so that the fondant doesn’t stick to you or your working surface…but sugar is sugar and gets sticky, so if it’s too hot or if your skin is too warm I find it just makes things worse.  Corn starch is definitely the way to go, it never gets sticky!  Figuring that out helped me greatly.  Never get fondant wet, and on hot days your fondant can “sweat” if you put it in the fridge and then take it out again, so beware of that.

Gel food coloring is great, you can get it lots of places and online as well.  Just put a tiny bit on the fondant and knead it in until is spread evenly.  Luster dust is a powdered version of food dye and can be used either on its own, or moistened with lemon extract and painted on with a paint brush.  You can get luster dust online as well.
Also, I have never used it but I have heard that Wilton Fondant is pretty much the grossest ever, haha.  I use Satin Ice and I think it tastes pretty good!
Thanks Carmina, this was so much fun! You have an awesome site, I enjoyed looking at it!
