Sally Welchman created this adorable bunny bread! She writes…
My mother always made us lovely birthday cakes in the shape of animals and favourite characters when we were children so it’s something that I like to do for my daughter now.
I was inspired to make the birthday bread because my daughter doesnt like sweet stuff that much, but I wanted to make her something fun for her birthday. I used to live in Germany and over there the bakeries make animal shaped bread at festival times, so I thought I could do something similar.
The bread is an ordinary white bread recipe:
500g strong bread flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp dried yeast
275 ml hand hot water
1 tblspn olive oil
ribbon to decorate
Combine all dry ingredients, mix in the water, add the oil, knead the dough for 5 minutes. Cover and leave to rise for an hour in a warm place.
Shape the dough into a bunny form on a baking sheet (remember it will expand a bit).
Push olives in to make eyes.
Leave the bread to rise again for 25 minutes.
Bake for 35 to 40 minutes in a preheated oven. (220 degrees C/ gas mark 7)
My tips would just be to experiment with cooking and baking and if you have an idea just try it!
Good luck with your book!
She also made a charming kangaroo with a baby joey.
